MLS Board Approves Expanding To 18 Teams By 2011

POSTED: 6:20 pm EDT July 24, 2008

(Sports Network) - Major League Soccer's Board of Governors approved expanding by two teams by 2011, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced following the Board of Governors meeting in Toronto on Thursday.

At the meeting, Garber provided updates on prospective expansion markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Markets reviewed included Atlanta, Las Vegas, Montreal, a second team in the New York area, Ottawa, Portland, St. Louis and Vancouver.

With the additions of the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC the past two seasons, there are currently 14 teams in the league. The Seattle Sounders FC will be joining MLS in 2009 and the yet-to-be-named Philadelphia franchise in 2010. The two new teams would bring the total to 18.
