San Diego Chargers 2009 NFL Draft Review
(Sports Network) -1 - Larry English, OLB, Northern Illinois (6-2, 255); 3 - Louis Vasquez, G, Texas Tech (6-5, 325); 4 - Vaughn Martin, DT, Western Ontario (6-3, 328); 4 - Tyronne Green, OL, Auburn (6-2, 309); 4 - Gartrell Johnson, RB, Colorado State (5-10, 219); 5 - Brandon Hughes, CB, Oregon State (5-10, 282) 6 - Kevin Ellison, S, USC (6-1, 224); 7 - Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU (6-0, 199) Analysis: The Chargers made one of the head-scratching picks of the first round, as a team that has Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips at outside linebacker reached for a player that many projected as a second-round talent. That's not to say English won't be a very good NFL player, but he'll certainly have a lot to prove. The third-round pick, Vasquez, looks like a reach as well and will have to show that he can function away from Texas Tech's gimmicky offense. Martin is another non-household name and project. The sturdy Johnson could be a fullback candidate. The Bolts waited until late in the draft to shore up the secondary, and Ellison in particular might never see the light of day on defense. Byrd, who was critically injured in a car accident last week, is the definition of a risk-reward selection, though the NFL world will be rooting for him to stick. Bottom Line: Strength of their draft will hinge on English's development, but at the moment, hard to find a lot of potential greatness among these picks. Grade: C
