National League Game Capsules

(Sports Network) - Chris Carpenter returned to form with seven strong innings, and Colby Rasmus homered for the second day in a row, as the Cardinals took the finale of this three-game set, 10-1, over the Reds. Carpenter (6-3) scattered five hits and a run with one walk and five strikeouts while also picking up an RBI single in the win. The former Cy Young Award winner was tagged for six runs on 11 hits in his last start versus San Francisco -- an outing that saw his earned run average climb more than 60 points. He had allowed three runs or less in each of his 10 previous starts this season. Skip Schumaker was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Rasmus hit a two-run homer and doubled for St. Louis, which had a three-game win streak broken on Saturday. Joe Thurston added a pair of RBI. Jay Bruce accounted for the offense with an RBI triple for the Reds, who had won three of the last four entering play. Bronson Arroyo (8-8) labored through five-plus innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs, five of those earned. Arroyo has dropped five of his last six decisions.

Final Score: Florida 5, Pittsburgh 0

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ricky Nolasco was spectacular on the mound, tossing eight innings of three-hit ball to lead the Florida Marlins in a 5-0 shutout of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the rubber match of a three-game series at Land Shark Stadium. Nolasco (6-6) fanned a season-high 12 batters and walked two to win his fourth consecutive start for the Marlins, who finished a six-game homestand with a 5-1 mark. In his six starts since a stint in Triple-A, the righty has allowed just seven runs over 41 frames. Jeremy Hermida went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Florida, which has won eight of its last 10 home series against Pittsburgh. John Baker went 2-for-4 with an RBI, double, and run scored. Dan Uggla and Chris Coghlan each drove in a run. The Marlins were without shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to a tight right hip flexor. Ross Ohlendorf (7-7) lasted five frames, giving up five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk to take the loss for the Pirates, who have lost two in a row and four of their last five overall. Andrew McCutchen, who had a pair of hits, and Garrett Jones accounted for the only three Pittsburgh hits in the tilt.

Final Score: Washington 5, Atlanta 3

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Scott Olsen came within one out of logging a complete game, as Washington took a 5-3 victory and two of three from an Atlanta club that was riding a season-high five-game win streak before dropping the last two. Olsen (2-4) worked 8 2/3 innings but was touched for a two-run homer in the ninth and allowed three runs overall on eight hits. The lefty walked five, struck out five and collected and RBI hit, winning for the first time since picking up his only other victory of the year on April 29 at Philadelphia. Mike MacDougal got the final out for his fifth save of the year while Ronnie Belliard scored three runs, had two hits, an RBI and walked. Nyjer Morgan was 3-for-5 with an RBI. The Nationals snapped a four-game slide with Saturday's win and won consecutive games for just the fifth time this season. Derek Lowe (7-7) continued his struggles for Atlanta, surrendering 10 hits and four runs in just 5 1/3 frames. The right-hander was winless in four June starts and has now given up 43 hits and 24 runs in his last 23 innings. Martin Prado was 4-for-4 and Nate McLouth ended with two hits and clubbed the ninth-inning home run off Olsen.

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, New York 0

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Joe Blanton pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, and the Phillies used a pair of solo homers to sweep the New York Mets in a 2-0 victory at Citizens Bank Park. Blanton (5-4) allowed only four hits and three walks while striking out five, as the Phillies swept the Mets for the first time since September 14-16, 2007, in New York. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley each hit a solo homer to account for the game's scoring. Rollins, since an 0-for-28 slump ended on Friday, now has seven hits in his last 14 at- bats after going 2-for-3 Sunday. He now has seven homers on the year, while Utley, the NL's starting second baseman in this year's All-Star Game, has 18. Philadelphia's pitching was sterling not only Sunday, but throughout the series, allowing just three runs the entire weekend. Brad Lidge earned his 16th save of the season. The Phillies' five-game winning streak against the Mets is the team's longest since recording nine straight victories from July 1, 2007-April 8, 2008. Johan Santana (9-7), who was named to the NL All- Star team Sunday, lost for the fourth time in five starts despite allowing just two runs on three hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts in seven frames. Santana also went 1-for-1 at the plate, while Luis Castillo went 2- for-2, but no other Mets player recorded a hit, as New York lost for the eighth time in 10 games.

Final Score: Chicago 8, Milwaukee 2

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Derrek Lee hit a two-run homer and knocked in three, as the Chicago Cubs cruised past the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-2, in the finale of a four-game set at Wrigley Field. Jake Fox also belted a two-run shot, while Kosuke Fukudome went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored for the Cubs, who took three of four in the series and have won five of seven overall. Ted Lilly (8-6), who was named to the National League All- Star squad earlier on Sunday, picked up the win. The veteran lefty went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on nine hits and fanned nine. Prince Fielder, who also received NL All-Star honors, had a pair of hits, including a solo homer, for Milwaukee, which has dropped four of its last five. Mike Burns (1-2) was handed the loss after getting raked for nine hits and seven runs. He struck out three and walked one in 4 2/3 innings.

Final Score: Arizona 4, Colorado 3

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Felipe Lopez had the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh and Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer an inning earlier to break up a no-hitter, as the Diamondbacks managed a 4-3 win against Colorado on just four hits. Dan Haren (8-5) pitched well for the D'Backs, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out six without issuing a walk. He has allowed two earned runs or less in eight straight starts, which in part earned him an All-Star nod earlier in the day. Arizona took two of three in the series but won for just the third time in 11 games. Chad Qualls notched his 15th save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Ubaldo Jimenez (6-8) carried a no-hitter into the sixth but it was broken up by Reynolds' homer which tied the game. In 6 1/3 frames, the right-hander yielded just four hits but allowed four runs with eight strikeouts and five walks. Todd Helton had two hits and an RBI and Troy Tulowitzki had a solo home run for the Rox, who have lost four of six.

Final Score: Los Angeles 7, San Diego 6 (13 innings)

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - James Loney went 2-for-6 and smacked a solo home run in the top of the 13th to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers past the San Diego Padres, 7-6, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco Park. Edward Mujica (2-4), who took over on the hill in the top of the 13th for San Diego, quickly offered up the eventual game-winning homer to Loney, who drove a 2-0 fastball just over the wall in right field. Jeff Weaver (5-2) tossed a scoreless 11th, 12th, and 13th to collect the win for the Dodgers, who are 4-2 in their last six games. Chad Billingsley allowed three runs on four hits in eight-plus frames, but didn't factor into the decision. Billingsley also hit his first career MLB home run and doubled. Casey Blake belted a three- run homer and Andre Ethier hit a solo homer for Los Angeles. Juan Pierre went 4-for-7 with an RBI for the victors. Josh Banks, who is filling in for the injured Wade LeBlanc, went 4 1/3 frames in the start, allowing six runs on nine hits with one walk for the Padres, who finished 2-5 on a seven-game homestand. Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley each hit a solo homer for San Diego. Everth Cabrera had a two-run single, while Eliezer Alfonzo and Will Venable added an RBI apiece.

Final Score: Houston 7, San Francisco 1

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Roy Oswalt hurled eight innings of one- run ball, and the Astros salvaged the last of this three-game set with a 7-1 victory over the Giants. Oswalt (5-4), coming off his best effort of the season -- a complete game two-hitter against San Diego -- gave up just three hits with six strikeouts compared to just one walk. Over his last three outings, spanning 23 innings, the veteran right-hander has allowed just 12 hits and three runs. Houston entered the series winners in six of its previous eight but managed just seven hits over the first two games. Houston eclipsed that feeble mark with 10 hits on Sunday, three of which came from Jeff Keppinger, who also scored twice and knocked in one. Oswalt helped himself with a two-run single while Miguel Tejada, Hunter Pence and Jason Michaels each homered in the rout. Tejada and Pence did so after being named to the N.L. All-Star team as reserves earlier in the day. The tables were turned Sunday against the Giants, who had outscored the 'Stros 22-0 en route to winning the first two games. San Francisco had just three hits, one of those a Rich Aurilia solo home run. Randy Johnson (8-6), attempting to win a third consecutive start and fourth straight decision, allowed five hits and four runs, three of those earned. The lanky lefty was forced to leave the game in the fourth with an injured left shoulder. The initial diagnosis is a strain.
