Lady Lions return as champions

Updated: Monday, December 23 2013, 09:44 AM EST

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-- One Penn State Athletics’ team is in the national spotlight with much to celebrate tonight.  The lady’s volleyball team beat Wisconsin last night to take home its sixth championship title.  6 News Reporter Lauren Hensley was there as the team arrived to Centre County after the big win!

It was an emotional homecoming for the Lady Lion’s Volleyball; they left State College hungry to bring home a victory and are returning as national champions.  Penn State defeated Wisconsin 3-1 Saturday and the team now join Stanford as the only teams to win a six championships.

For senior Maggie Harding, she has achieved a bookend to her career.   “We won my freshman year so it was the only way we could go out was ending with a win,” Harding said.

The Lady Lion’s took the last flight of Seattle to end up here at Rec Hall, where another championship banner will go up. After a long flight back to Pennsylvania, freshman Taylor Krause and Kelly Robertson were greeted by their family, who said this will be the talk of the holidays.

Many former Penn Staters are also celebrating the big victory. In the stacks of T-shirts at Family Clothesline, Harrison Frantz is searching for a volleyball shirt to commemorate the win.  He said although traditionally volleyball is regarded as a West Coast sport, the women’s team is shattering those expectations. “I think we can continue to recruit some great talent and show the East Coast can represent and hang in there and we just need to go in there year after year and continue doing what we do,” Frantz said.

Championship volleyball T-shirts are expected to arrive on the shelves this week.
