McCort, Tyrone Looking For Head Coaches

Kevin Sheridan and Steve Guthoff have decided to step away from local high school football coaching.

Sheridan, head football coach at Bishop McCort since 2011, and Guthoff, head coach at Tyrone the last two seasons, have resigned, opening up positions at two of District 6's annual powerhouses.

Sheridan decided to step away to be with family. His son, Owen, was born with a 7 lb. growth on his head, an encephalocele, and was not given long to live. However, after undergoing surgery, Owen is miraculously recovering.

Due to the uncertainty of my son Owen’s future, the decision to step down was difficult but the right choice for my family and I,” said Sheridan in a school release.

After graduating Bishop McCort in 2000, Sheridan was an Crimson Crushers assistant coach from 2005-2010 and was named head coach in 2011. In 2012, he led the team to a 9-4 record and an appearance in the District 6-A championship game.

Kevin will continue to serve as a full-time Social Studies and Religion teacher at Bishop McCort and said in the school-issued release he hopes to remain as active as his schedule permits with the Crusher football program in the future.
Steve Guthoff resigned Tuesday as head coach of the Tyrone High School football program. In two seasons, he led the Golden Eagles to consecutive District 6-AA semifinal appearances. He also had the unenviable task of replacing local coaching legend John Franco.
Calls to Guthoff on Wednesday were not returned.
Social media websites, including an article in the Tyrone High School student newspaper Eagle Eye News, indicated Franco might be interested in returning to the Golden Eagles program. Franco, currently the head coach at Altoona, led Tyrone from 1994-2011. He  helped the Golden Eagles win a state championship in 1999 and were state runners-up in 2011.
Franco, speaking to 6 Sports over the phone Wednesday night, said, "I'm still the head coach at Altoona and I'm getting these guys ready for the winter program. Tyrone has not contacted me."
