O'Brien: Penn State QB Battle

Updated: Friday, August 16 2013, 03:04 AM EDT

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Bill O'Brien told reporters Thursday morning he is "very close" to naming a starting quarterback, but wants to let the battle between Tyler Ferguson and Christian Hackenberg play out a few more days.

"It's very even," O'Brien said. "I actually spoke to both of the guys this morning and told them I couldn't be prouder of where they're at right now. They've had a lot of good moments."

O'Brien's announcement that the race is "even" likely says more about the progression of Hackenberg, a true freshman, than it does Ferguson, a junior college transfer. One week ago at media day, O'Brien gave Ferguson the edge due to having been in the system since January.

Also during the conference call, while O'Brien held firm to his "play one quarterback" belief, he did not shoot down the possibility of both quarterbacks playing.

"Let’s not put a huge amount of stock into who the starter is," O'Brien said. "That guy will start the game, but the other guy is going to play football for us this year."
