Martella's keeps AAABA run going in thrilling win over New Brunswick

Updated: Saturday, August 9 2014, 02:41 AM EDT

JOHNSTOWN -- Down 5-2 going into its final three outs, Martella's Pharmacy had New Brunswick right where it wanted them.

Just like their ninth inning comeback against New Orleans on Thursday, the Johnstown AAABA champions rallied in the final frame to beat New Brunswick, scoring five runs all with one or two outs in the top of the ninth inning, then surviving a last out at home plate to win.

Johnstown 7. New Brunswick 6.

Martella's began its rally in the ninth inning by loading the bases with one out. A double play ball was dropped by the second baseman, resulting in a Johnstown run which cut the New Brunswick lead to 5-3. Tony Strasiser then hit a hard grounder to first base which was misplayed by Alejandro Diaz, leading to another score and a 5-4 game.

With the bases still loaded, Tyler Smith walked to bring in the game-tying run, followed by Anthony Fanelli walking to give Martella's Pharmacy a 6-5 lead. On Fanelli's walk, New Brunswick pitcher Howie Brey charged the home plate umpire to argue to the call. Brey was ejected from the game, along with New Brunswick's shortstop.

"The wrong team is going home tonight," New Brunswick manager Glenn Fredricks told the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat.

Martella's Pharmacy added a seventh run on a wild pitch to lead 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth.

New Brunswick scored to cut the Johnstown lead to 7-6, with runners on first and second base with one out.

The next batter grounded to first base, Luke Williams stepped on first base for the inning's second out. but his throw to second base was high. Ian Helsel jumped to catch the high throw but the runner at second base was safe. Ivan Olivera, running on the play from second base, sprinted for home plate as the game's tying run. Helsel fired a strike to Martella's catcher Pat Gully who blocked the plate and applied the game-ending tag.

Martella's Pharmacy will play Chicago Metro (4-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
