Penns Valley's Montminy given PSU scholarship

UNIVERSITY PARK -- When a college student opens a conversation with his parents by saying “I have good news and I have bad news,” there are a host of directions his words could go. For Kevin Montminy, a senior walk-on guard on the Penn State men’s basketball team and a 4.0 student, this is what followed when he called his parents in Centre Hall, Pa., last week…
Bad News: I broke my nose in practice again today.
Good News: We don’t have to pay for college this year.
Crooked schnoz aside, the good news won out. Earlier in the day, head coach Patrick Chambers pulled the team together before Montminy was taken to the doctor to tell him he had earned a scholarship for the 2014-15 season. Just a few minutes prior, the Penns Valley Area product dove after a loose ball and a teammate’s leg connected with his face.
“Everybody who knows Kevin Montminy – is there anyone better than him,” Chambers asked players as they gathered around. “Is he the greatest brother? The greatest teammate? He is everything this program is all about … We want to offer you a scholarship for this season.”
Asked the next day if he was in too much of a daze to remember the presentation, Montminy laughed and admitted he was a little bit out of it but the greatness of the moment was not lost on him.
“It was awesome and definitely unexpected, especially while I was feeling pretty bloody and broken,” he said. “The best part of it all is knowing the coaches and the rest of the team think I deserve it.”
Montminy has seen action in 40 career games over the last three seasons with 24 total points and 10 rebounds. He scored a career-high five vs. Iowa Feb. 14, 2013, and has had multi-rebound games on two occasions.
Off the court, however, he is a true most valuable player. With a 4.0 grade-point average in each of the last five semesters, Montminy is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten honoree and the team’s Academic Award recipient. He is a part of the Schreyer Honors College and the Smeal College of Business’ MAAC program, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s in accounting.
“There is no one who works harder than Kevin Montminy,” Chambers praised. “He represents everything we want from a student-athlete in our program and we are so fortunate to have had him – and his work ethic – around for the last three years. We are thrilled to be able to recognize Kevin's dedication with a scholarship for his final season.”
