St. Francis closes season with win

Updated: Sunday, November 24 2013, 10:53 AM EST

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis football team used a 17-point first quarter and a stifling rush defense to defeat Robert Morris, 23-3, on Senior Day at DeGol Field. Robert Morris finished with just 11 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Kicker Lance Geesey tied the school record with his three made field goals while also tying the single-season record with 11 made field goals.

The Flash jumped ahead early with scores on its first four possessions. Kyle Harbridge caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Max Ward on the team’s opening possession. Lorenzo Jerome made his sixth interception of the season on the Colonials’ ensuing drive, and Harbridge scampered in from 10 yards out to put SFU ahead, 14-0, just over five minutes into the first quarter. Harbridge finished the game with 110 rushing yards on 29 carries. He finishes his collegiate career with 4,126 yards and 36 rushing touchdowns. He also became the first player in school history to score over 100 points in a season. He finished with 110.

Geesey came through with a pair of field goals on the next two drives. The first was set up by another turnover. RMU quarterback Paul Jones was sacked and stripped by Asalemo Fruean. The fumble recovery by Joe Laukaitis set the Flash up at the RMU 17. Geesey connected from 29 yards to make it 17-0. After an RMU punt on the next possession, a Ward pass to Khairi Dickson set Geesey up for a 32-yard attempt, which he made with 6:34 to play in the first half. It was 20-0 Red Flash.

An interception for the Colonials late in the half set up a 22-yard field goal that would prove to be the only scoring of the day for Robert Morris. The Flash got those points back in the third quarter, with Ward hitting Dane Domonkos for a 53-yard pass play on the first play of the drive. It stalled in the RMU red zone, but Geesey connected from 35 yards out to tie the school records. Domonkos finished with four grabs for 77 yards. Ward was 10-of-18 for 164 yards and a touchdown.

The Flash converted on four of its five chances inside the red zone, with the fifth coming on the final possession of the game as SFU ran out the clock. Not counting that drive, Saint Francis scored on its final 15 red zone possessions of the season.

Fruean finished with two sacks to give him 8.5 for the season. That puts him in fourth place on the single-season record list. DaQuan Minter also grabbed his sixth interception of the season in the second quarter. He and Jerome finished tied for the third most interceptions a season. Lineman Brody Maughan-Evanson also registered an interception on the final drive of the game for Robert Morris. That gave the Flash defense 16 picks for the season, just three shy of tying the school record for interceptions in a season. Bishop Neal led the team with eight tackles and finished with a team-high 79 for the season.
