UPJ Splits Doubleheader with Seton Hill

Updated: Sunday, March 23 2014, 10:59 PM EDT

Pitt-Johnstown got strong pitching from John Fees and Brantley Rice in Friday's 3-2 game one victory over Seton Hill University at Point Stadium, but the Griffins came back with a 4-1 win in the nightcap to earn the split in both teams' PSAC opener.  The Mountain Cats are 6-11 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC Western Division.

In the first game, Pitt-Johnstown used two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a one-run deficit, on its way to the 3-2 win.

Seton Hill scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead, but the Mountain Cats came right back in the bottom of the frame.  Brett Marabito's sacrifice fly to left scored Ernesto Rizzitano to tie it, before Matt McGhee scored from third on a wild pitch to give Pitt-Johnstown a 3-2 lead.

That's all the Mountain Cats would need.  Fees and Rice combined to hold Seton Hill to just two runs on two hits.  Fees tossed the first four innings, allowed both runs, and fanned five to improve to 2-4.  Rice pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit.  He also struck out two to record his first save of the year.

Jake WarnerKyle Morrow, Rizzatano, and McGhee accounted for the four Pitt-Johnstown base hits.

In the nightcap, Seton Hill got solo homeruns from Brandon Jossey and Cody Herold off of Mountain Cat starter Derek Younker on its way to the 4-1 win.

Pitt-Johnstown was held to three hits.   Morrow had an RBI double, while McGhee doubled, and Nate Negri added a pinch hit single.

Younker suffered the loss and dropped to 2-3 after surrendering four earned runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.

With the split, Seton Hill is now 12-9 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West.
