Franklin hits ground running at PSU Spring practice

Updated: Tuesday, March 18 2014, 01:45 AM EDT

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State opened its first spring football session under James Franklin on Monday, the first of 15 practices before the annual Blue-White Game on April 12.

Franklin, speaking to reporters Monday prior to the Nittany Lions' practice, urged Penn State needed to hit the ground running, literally.

"I told them the first day that if you don’t know where to go or what you’re doing when the whistle blows, then sprint in a circle until you figure it out."

Franklin singled out the offensive line as the biggest position of concern going into spring practice. Guard Miles Dieffenbach and tackle Donovan Smith are the line's only two returning starters. Franklin added some spots on the line are only two-deep on the depth chart.

Brian Gaia, who was recruited to Penn State as an offensive lineman but switched to defensive line last season, moves back to the o-line in 2014.

"People approach me and all they want to talk about is Christian Hackenberg," Franklin said. "But it takes a lot more than a quarterback to be successful. The game of football is played up front, on the offensive and defensive line."
