UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Beaver Stadium was looking a lot brighter Tuesday night as the new LED Nittany Lion logos on the video boards were lit up for the first time.

The 35-foot by 25-foot backlit logos were placed on the north and south videoboards last month as part of Beaver Stadium's videoboard installation project.

About 1,400 LED lights will illuminate the white portion of each 6,500-pound logo, giving the illusion that the Nittany Lion is floating. Many fans stopped to check out the sight.

"I think it is great.I think it is going to be really cool for people to see it light up at night at the night games," Penn State senior Demi Orphanos said. "And it is going to be really cool people seeing it from far away when people are driving into State College."

The logos will automatically turn on at dusk and shut off at 11 p.m. During late-start home games, the logos may remain on later.

"I think it is going to be seen from very far away and I think it is going to become an icon for the stadium and Penn State itself," Penn State senior Alayna Craig-Lucas said.
