UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State University officials said a "major announcement" will be made at Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

Penn State Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Penn State President Rodney Erickson have scheduled a press conference at 4:15 p.m. at the All-Sports Museum in the stadium.

There is wide-spread speculation that the next head football coach at Penn State will be named. In the past couple of days, multiple media outlets have reported that Vanderbilt University head football coach James Franklin could be named the next head coach.

A search committee, composed of six Penn State staffers, including Joyner, began the search for a new head coach on Jan. 2. At that time, Joyner said the search would take days, rather than weeks.

A plane from Destin, Fla., where Franklin lives, returned to State College on Wednesday night, with Erickson and Joyner getting off the plane, but not taking any questions from media.

Early on, Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden was a favorite to become the next PSU football coach, but he announced last weekend that he would remain in south Florida.

Joyner named defensive coordinator Larry Johnson as the team’s interim head coach. Johnson told media on Jan. 3 that he was interested in the top coaching position.

The position was left vacant after Bill O'Brien left Happy Valley to become the head coach of the NFL's Houston Texans. At least eight other staffers left the PSU program following O'Brien's departure, with many of them taking jobs with the Texans.

The next head coach will be the 16th in Penn State history.

6 News and 6 Sports staff will continue to update this developing story as information becomes available.
