WJAC-TV SPORTS INTERNSHIPS
WJAC-TV, an NBC affiliate owned by Cox Broadcasting, is looking for Sports Interns for the Fall Semester. Overall, you will see and experience what happens in the Channel 6 Sports Department. You will learn how to shoot, edit and write with Sports Anchors and Reporters. Update the website throughout the week, including scores, stats, pictures, video, etc. This internship must be taken for College Credits. Previous college TV station experience a plus, but not mandatory. We are looking for hard workers, who want to get their foot in the door. No phone calls please. GENERAL GUIDLINES:
1. No intern or candidate for internship shall be discriminated against because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status or any other basis which is prohibited by applicable Federal, State or City Law.
2. All internships are unpaid positions. In order to assure compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act:
-The internship shall be for the benefit of the student.
-The internship, even though it may include the actual operation of some station equipment, shall be similar to the training that would be given at an educational institution.
-Interns shall not displace regular employees, but will work under their close supervision.
-The station shall derive no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern, and on occasion may actually be impeded.
-An intern shall not be entitled to employment with WJAC-TV at the conclusion of her/his internship period. An intern may, however, compete for employment openings at WJAC-TV at the conclusion of her/his internship period.
-An intern should understand in advance that she/he will not be entitled to wages for the time spent in an internship.
3. An intern is not an employee and therefore is not covered by the station's employee benefit plan or worker's compensation insurance.
4. The internship is intended as a learning experience. The duties of the intern are clearly spelled out by the station department head.
5. Starting and ending dates are specified in advance for each internship. Internships are to last no longer than one quarter or one semester unless an extension is granted by the internship coordinator.
6. WJAC-TV reserves the right to terminate any intern at any time for any cause.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
LOCATION: The student-intern will be located in the News Department and will work under the direction of the News Director, Executive Producer of Sports or other departmental management and staff.PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: To involve the student-intern in the planning, development, editing and writing of television news/sports stories, providing the intern with the opportunity to be involved in all phases of news/sports broadcast journalism.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Develop news/sports story theme from given assignment concept.
-Gather necessary facts and information.
-Accompany and assist photojournalist and/or reporter.
-Correlate data, oversee editing, write copy.
-Assist department personnel as needed.
EVALUATION PROCESS: In addition to completing the evaluation forms submitted by the school, the News Director, the Executive Producer of Sports and other Department management and staff will oversee the student-intern's work on a regular basis, providing direction and evaluation.HOURS: Evenings and weekends, occasional days, flexible schedule.ELIGIBILITY: To qualify for an internship at WJAC-TV, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Enrolled in a four-year college
2. Must be a junior or senior, or graduate student majoring in communications or journalism.

COX TELEVISION INTERNSHIP PROGRAMThe Cox Broadcasting Washington Bureau is looking for energetic, experienced and self-motivated college or graduate students for fall, spring and summer internships. We want people who are training for broadcast journalism careers as producers, reporters, photographers or editors.As a Cox intern, we expect you to help our reporters and producers by researching story ideas, setting up and conducting interviews on Capitol Hill, and pulling sound bites. You will support the newsroom by learning our stations and lawmakers, writing copy, and answering phone calls.We help you produce a resume tape that includes a stand-up montage and at least three packages. To do this, we give you access to our editing equipment, video and interviews. You’ll learn how to edit and you’ll work with our photographers to shoot your stand-ups. Our reporters and producers will work with you on writing, interviewing and delivery. If you are interested in television news production (shooting, editing, audio, lighting) you can also work with our photographers and editors on these skills.The Cox bureau is located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. We turn stories for our 10 local news stations across the country. Our internship is unpaid and you must provide proof of college/graduate school credit to be considered. We require interns to work at least two days and priority is given to those available additional days.
