Baby Sign Language

Posted: 2:52 pm EDT March 18, 2009Updated: 3:15 pm EDT March 18, 2009

The Children's Center at the Cambria County Library in downtown Johnstown offers Story Time three days a week to babies and children up to 5-years-old. During the 60 minute session, the staff reads the children books and sings nursery rhymes, but that's not all.

The staff also incorporates sign language into their hour of fun, specific hand and finger motions that convey words and meaning.

Most babies and toddlers can hear, but they don't have the physical ability to speak more than a few words, if any. But in time, they can learn how to communicate through sign language.

Many of the moms involved tell us their children are less frustrated now, because they can communicate what they're truly thinking, feeling, and needing.

Speaking remains the overall goal, so words are generally used along with the signs.

If you're interested in taking part in the Cambria County Library's Story Time program, space is limited and you must preregister. Contact the Cambria County Library at 536-5131.
