Success By 6: First-Graders Give Food To Needy

A class of first-graders at Conemaugh Valley Elementary School are showing the adults a thing or two about giving. It all started when 7-year-old Christian Malfer decided his birthday party was a great way to feed the hungry.

"He was going to ask each kid who came to his birthday party for just one can" said Christian's dad, Randy Malfer.

Eventually the plan grew to include Christian's entire class.

"It's so we can have more cans and boxes for people who need it," said Christian.

For the end of the year project, each child brought in two food items a week for four weeks. Donations went to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Their teacher said she couldn't be prouder of how far the students have come this year.

"My guess is that the depth of understanding is still surfaced because of their young age, but this is where it starts," said Marsha Critchfield. "I am proud of them everyday. I hate to see them go."

Christian's mission to help the hungry will continue well past his first year in school.

"Actually he wants to do it bigger next year," said Malfer. "He wants to get his brother involved next year and make a school effort if that's OK with the principal."

That shouldn't be a problem. Principal Kanich said this experience, he hopes, leads to more volunteering for the kids later in life. He said it is a tribute to good parenting.

As for Christian, expect great things from the boy whose name is very fitting.

"He has all the support he needs," said Malfer. "If he wants to do it, we will be there for him and he can do it."
