CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. -- The football season opener at Johnstown's Trojan Stadium kicked off with a moment of silence for those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The students were all in elementary school when the attacks happened, but their young ages didn't stop the terrorist attacks from having a profound effect."I feel like people are starting to forget," said senior Jocelyn Lonsinger.Lonsinger is one of 80 members in the Johnstown High School Key Club. As part of their service project, the group is selling 9/11 bracelets at football games and around school. At $2 each, the goal is to raise $400 for the permanent Flight 93 memorial."It was a natural fit to help because it's something that's close to home," said senior Katie Kovalchik. "We don't want people to forget that Somerset was also affected by 9/11."The students put in a lot of hours by designing the bracelets, getting the funding to buy them and getting the word out about the fundraiser. For the group of over-achievers, it's just another days work."High school students are learning how to become adults," said Rob Heinrich, the key club adviser. "The best kind of citizens are the ones who get involved and give back to the community."Getting involved is what the key club is all about. They do 18 service projects a year, like helping the Kiwanis Club beautify the Bedford St. exit into Johnstown, visiting retirement homes during the holidays, teaching kids online safety and more."I think we are going to see a good example for other schools and organizations," Kovalchik. "We want them to know they should help and can help."As for the bracelets, $400 may not sound like a lot, but students said they just want to do their part in making the permanent Flight 93 memorial a reality."Every penny is going to make that a respectable memorial to honor those heroes," said Heinrich.
