Community rally to build hockey rink

PORTAGE, Pa.

The Portage youth hockey team in Cambria County said it is in need of a new rink.

Currently the organization plays on rundown tennis courts but has a goal of raising enough money to build a new rink for the players.

On Sunday, the community held a corn-hole tournament and basket raffle fundraiser at the Portage Italian Club hoping to bring its goal closer to becoming a reality.

We had the property, said Italian Club trustee Thomas Weyandt.  Good turnout, good cause and good group of people.

We just got organized this year so we are still in our infancy stage, said hockey president Chris Troxell.  But were doing  pretty good with the help of the community and establishments like this. "

The rink costs about $120,000 to $125,000 to build.  All of the money raised from the benefit will go directly to the team's fund.
