ONLY ON 6: Restaurant grabs hold of would-be robber

By Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- It's video you'll only see on 6 News as a local restaurant owner takes ahold and chases a would-be robber.

It happened at Capri Pizza in Lower Yoder Township just after 2 p.m. Friday. Police said a girl in her 20s claimed she had a gun as she tried to rob the restaurant. She was not able to get away.

The whole thing played out in less than five minutes and it was all caught on camera.

The owners of the restaurant said it was a typical Friday afternoon. They were just finishing up the lunch hour when things turned a bit more hectic. The restaurant owner said he wasn't scared; he didn't even flinch, as is seen in the video.

At 2 p.m. exactly a woman wearing a coat and scarf covering her face walks through the side parking lot along Lighter Drive, rounding the corner to the front door of Capri Pizza.

Thirty seconds later she walks through the front door, goes straight to the counter and talks to the owner of the restaurant. He said she told him to give her all the money or she was going to shoot him.

At this point most people being robbed would comply, but instead Andrew Croteau said he grabbed the would-be robber without knowing whether or not she had a gun. In the video they can be seen struggling before he jumps up and over the counter, chasing her outside.

At 2:01 p.m. Croteau and the girl can be seen still struggling in the parking lot. Eventually she stops and other restaurant employees come running out.

Police show up a few minutes later, pat her down, handcuff her and take her away.

The woman's name has not been released because she has not yet been arraigned. Police said she did not have a weapon, but that doesn't matter. Police said she is facing several charges, including criminal attempt to commit robbery and terroristic threats.
