Greater Johnstown HS holds 'Pink Game' for former librarian

By: Jackalyn Kovac

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The students in the Greater Johnstown school district call her Mrs. B, but Kira Balmgardener is no longer teaching for the district as she continues her battle with cancer.
Friday's basketball games were turned into a fundraiser to help her out.

"Everyone is coming together to support someone who has done so much to support the Greater Johnstown school district over a number of years," said principal Amy Arcurio.

In 2011, Kira was diagnosed with breast cancer, and again in 2012. This fall, she was told she had brain cancer.

Many describe Mrs. B as a strong and caring woman.

"We have just had a lot of people come together to make this fundraiser for Kira a real blessing to this school district," said Arcurio.

Several items, including T-shirts, bracelets and face painting were sold. Baskets were raffled off; all to help a woman who means a lot to this community.

"If we can give back to her, just a small amount of what she has done over the years, then this night would be a smashing success," said Arcurio.
