Demo work taking place near historic Bellefonte buildings

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- A building behind the Hotel Do-De, and next door Garman Theatre, in Centre County is being knocked down by a construction crew.

6 News reporter Lauren Hensley said a small building behind the hotel was being torn down, but the main structures of the hotel and theatre remained untouched. Crews said Thursdays work is in preparation for larger-scale demolition work.

The Garman Theatre and Hotel Do-De have been slated for demolition following court appeals and objections to leveling the building in favor of an affordable housing project.

This is the first demolition work surrounding the hotel and theatre sites following a court ruling that allowed developer Ara Kervandjian to begin demolition on the theatre.

Within the past week, crews have been removing seats and other items that were salvageable from the Garman to be put into storage.

The theatre was scheduled for demolition on Dec. 20, but after representatives with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission met with Kervandjian, Centre County officials and others, the demo plans were put on hold.

Talks regarding the buildings demolition center on whether Kervandjian receives federal funding for the housing project. Additionally, demolition approval was pending state environmental department approval for asbestos and other issues.

There has not been a timetable set for any building demolition.
