PSU alum's story made into a blockbuster movie
By: Lauren Hensley
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Hundreds of feet step through Veterans Plaza on Penn State's campus every single day. But only a few take a moment to step and check out the name written on the wall which is Lt. Michael P. Murphy. He is a Medal of Honor recipient, a Navy Seal who died in combat, a Penn State graduate and now he is the subject of a major blockbuster movie.
"I am going to think about that every single time now," Penn State student and veteran Joshua Milliron said. "His family should be really happy about this. I know I would if I was his family."
Milliron is Marine now attending Penn State University. He aspires to one day becoming an officer in the military like Murphy. He didn't know the plaza was in honor or Murphy and when he learned about it, he said he feels a deeper connection to the space.
"The armed forces we like to think we are all sort of a brotherhood. I mean we heckle each other a little here and there and training standards are different. But other than that we are pretty much all in the same fight," Milliron said.
"Lone Survivor" is set during the war in Afghanistan. The film is based on the true story of the failed U.S Navy Seals' mission Operation Red Wings. Three of the four-man team died during combat. Murphy was the leader of the team. So far the movie has earned an estimated $38.5 million in the box office.
