Frigid temperatures impact demand for cold weather supplies

By: Lauren Hensley

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Hardware stores are seeing an increased demand in cold weather supplies.  Managers at one shop in Bellefonte said they are having a difficult time keeping this inventory on the shelves.  Cold weather supplies are becoming one hot item in the frigid temperatures.

Empty shelves and bare racks are a rare sight at Triangle Building Supplies in Bellefonte but they are a common sight during this recent cold snap.  Managers said they are running low on some essential cold weather items.

Actually it has impacted us quite a bit when it comes to caulking, spray foams, insulation, heat tape and items like that. Those are basically the items customers are coming in here and looking for, purchasing manager Scott Corman said.

Restocking inventory is usually no problem but Corman said because of the length and range of this cold front, demands are high throughout the country making it competitive to place orders.

The big issue now is since the first freeze we got, it is not isolated to our area but it looks like two-thirds of the country has gotten much colder weather than we are used to. So we are having a hard time getting these products now, Corman said.

The best advice experts have to avoid being left out in the cold is to plan ahead.  Corman said when the forecast calls for low temperatures purchase the supplies needed before it hits.  But if it is already too late, Corman advises to call ahead to the local hardware stores first to ask if they have the needed product in stock.
