School board hears protests over officer decision
DUBOIS, Pa. At a packed room at the DuBois school board meeting on Wednesday night, parents, students and staff protested the board's decision to replace the schools current resource officers.
The superintendent presented a plan that calls for retired police officers, possibly unarmed, to be hired to patrol their schools.
People took to the podium with strong concerns about the dangers of not having an armed police presence.
If you want to tell us that a rent a cop, or security is a good enough piece of mind for you, said student Cassie ODonnell. Then tell us that but I do not think any of us are going to believe it.
The biggest advantage of an SRO over security is the portable radio worn by our officers, said Officer Orlando Prosper. I have the ability at any point to shutdown frequency and to get anybody in three counties to us, police, fire, ambulance get helicopters in the air, seconds save lives.
Board members said there is not enough money in the budget to keep the two officers at the high school. The superintendent added for the price of two regular officers, six retired officers could be hired.
