Firefighters battle house fire in Bedford County

By: WJAC Web Staff

OSTERBURG, Pa. -- Flames were not visible by the time our crews arrived but firefighters were working hard.

The fire chief said the people who live in the home are from Tennessee staying at the house for the holidays and the top floor is most likely a total loss.

"They were in the house, they were downstairs and started seeing smoke and they started getting out of the house and that is when they saw the flames," said Imler Fire Chief Rick Long.  "It took us a little time to get here because of the snow on the roads and stuff. It slowed our response time and everyone's response time."

Several trucks lined the road as the firefighters had to shuttle water with their tankers. That was their only water source because no fire hydrants were found in their coverage area.

Firefighters went inside with flashlights to ensure the fire was out. In the process, they had to throw out belongings out of the home.

"When you go into a house fire, half hour is max get the guys out for rehab," said Long.

The cause is still under investigation.

There were no reported injuries.
