Beaverdale man accused of raping mentally disabled teen

By Maria Miller

BEAVERDALE, Pa. - A Cambria County main is behind bars after police said he raped and sexually assaulted a mentally disabled teenager at his Beaverdale home.

The criminal complaint is graphic and paints a picture of a young girl who doesn't quite understand what happened to her. But police said they have the text and Facebook messages between the two to prove it and a written confession from the defendant himself.

On Monday Summerhill Township police said they got a call from a concerned family member who hadn't seen their 16-year-old child for nearly two hours.

"We started an investigation as to where she was at and in fact when I was on the phone with the relative who reported it, she confirmed she'd just come back home," said Chief Paul Bonfanti.

Police said when they went to talk to the girl she told them she was with David Carman at his home in Beaverdale having sexual relations and police said they quickly learned it wasn't the first time.

"This had been going on since about April of last year now," said Bonfanti. "There were approximately 10 assaults. There were 10 separate occasions where they had sexual relations."

Through a search warrant police said they retrieved Facebook and text messages between the two stemming back to April, messages that were sexual in nature and occurred before each alleged assault took place.

"He said he used to go up there and he would help her with her homework," said Bonfanti. "I don't really think there was any stalking going on. Somehow they just started a relationship."

Police said Carman would often message the girl before driving to her home to pick her up and take her back to his home along Cameron Avenue in Beaverdale. He's been charged with several counts of rape, not only because he's 45 years old and the victim is 16, but because police said she's mentally handicapped.

"She has mental issues that she's had a bad childhood," said Bonfanti. "She's able to comprehend but in a childish way."

Police said Carman isn't denying what happened; in fact, they said he's confessed, even giving police a written statement describing what happened.

"He said he knew it was wrong," said Bonfanti. "That's all he said ... He knew it was wrong."

Carman is in the Cambria County Prison on $100,000 bail.
