GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A man piloting an experimental, self-made plane missed a runway while attempting to land at a small airport in western Pennsylvania.
Grove City Regional Airport manager Doug Thomas tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that an airport assistant ran to help the pilot almost immediately after he crashed Friday morning at the airport in Mercer County.
Jim Gaiter, vice president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, tells the newspaper the pilot is Robert Scott Winder, of Grove City, and that he's about 80 years old.
Winder had recently fixed up the plane and has more than 40 years' experience flying and building experimental planes.
A Mercer County 911 dispatcher said the pilot was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. Winder's condition wasn't immediately available.
