Reports: Penn State to name new AD Saturday
By: Marc Stempka
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State University athletic officials have announced the school will hold a news conference Saturday afternoon, with speculation indicating the school will announce the next athletic director.
In a release issued Friday afternoon, the news conference was scheduled for noon at Beaver Stadium.
The press conference is "…to make an announcement on a personnel decision within Intercollegiate Athletics," the release said.
University President Eric Barron will lead the news conference, the release said.
The school has been conducting a nationwide athletic director search following an announcement earlier this summer that current AD David Joyner will retire Aug. 1.
Joyner took over the athletic department on an interim basis following the dismissal of Tim Curley in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal in November 2011. The interim title was later removed from Joyner's position and he was appointed athletic director under former president Rodney Erickson.
Prior to Barron's news conference, the university Board of Trustees Committee on Compensation will meet at 11 a.m.
That committee approves items like contracts and salaries at the school, but would not have the final say on hiring. The hiring is at the discretion of Barron's approval.
On June 26, the school announced the search committee for a new athletic director. Members of the included Linda Caldwell, Penn State's faculty athletics representative to the NCAA and professor of recreation, park and tourism management; Julie Del Giorno, athletics integrity officer; Chamelle Green, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator; Robert Pangborn, vice present and dean for undergraduate education; Tom Poole, vice president for administration; and Coquese Washington, Penn State Lady Lions basketball coach.
The committee also worked with Collegiate Sports Associates, a nationwide search and consulting firm, through the process.
6 News will have coverage of the news conference in the Saturday evening newscasts.
