Police warning residents of jury duty scam

Residents warned to not give our personal information

By: Marc Stempka

RIDGWAY, Pa. State police in Elk County are warning residents about a possible scam where callers try to trick those who answer the telephone into providing personal information because they allegedly missed jury duty.

Police said they have received information about residents receiving phone calls where theyre told they were selected for or have not reported for jury duty.

Police said those making the calls have asked to verify names of individuals and social security numbers but also asks for credit card numbers.  If the information is not provided, the caller threatens the person answering the phone with fines.

Police said judicial system employees do not contact people by telephone and ask for personal information like Social Security numbers, dates of birth or credit card numbers.

Police said these calls are an attempt to steal or use a residents identity by collecting sensitive and private information.

Anyone who receives a phone call involving personal information about reporting for jury duty should hang up, police said.

If anyone has already been contacted and provided personal information to anyone who called regarding jury duty reporting, police said those people should closely monitor their credit reports and report the incident to their local police department.
