Phil sees shadow

By: WJAC Web Staff

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- America's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil was pulled from his burrow at Gobbler's Knob and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.

The Groundhog Day tradition that began in 1887 now attracts tens of thousands of spectators and has grown into a party atmosphere.

Members of the Inner Circle, the group charged with protecting Phil and interpreting his prediction, removed the groundhog from his burrow at 7:20 on Sunday morning in front of a crowd estimated at nearly 30,000 people.

Phil directed the Inner Circle members to a scroll that said he would not predict a Super Bowl winner, but did predict six more weeks of winter.
