Historic barn will come down in Ferguson Township
by: Stef Davis
This historic barn in Ferguson Township causing quite the outcry Monday evening.
Ron McLaughlin says, Every effort should be made to preserve and enhance the barn and other aspects of the site as unique and contributing elements to Circleville farms identity and character."
Ron McLaughlin lives near the barn. After a housing developer began dismantling the structure, he and other neighbors alerted the Ferguson Township supervisors to halt the demolition. But supervisors Monday night say the barn has no community value and is falling apart. And renovation is just too expensive.
George Pytel, Ferguson Township supervisor, says, I think looking at the barn and putting it in a position where you can actually put people in it, its just going to be too expensive to actually do."
So, to the disappointment of some neighbors, supervisors agree to allow the housing developer to tear down the barn. But the developer says they understand the plight of the neighborhood and are planning on using pieces of the old barn in new construction.
Matt Harlow, represents housing developer, says, Weve done quite a bit of salvaging the barn the best we could and incorporating it into the new community center."
