Local shoe repair shops gives final farewell

By: Kerri Corrado

A local iconic shoe repair business open for 92 years is saying its final farewell.

Yankee Shoe Repair Factory in downtown Johnstown is closing in September.

It was a family business for generations, being one of 26 shoe repair shops in the Johnstown region still standing.

The business was owned by the Coco family, passed down through generations.

Now of the closing caused panic and loyal customers rushed to the Bedford Street shop to give their shoes one last fix.

The discussion to close came after Caramel Coco, who used to own the shop, died.

Larry Coco, who helps run the shop now, says other reasons for the shop closing are because shoe repairmen are retiring and there is a lack of sustainability within the current business.

Half of the family business deals with shoe repairs and the other orthopedics. But, now show repairs are in decline.

"When we look at a five-year plan with shoe repairs gone, essentially it was a tough decision to be made after 92 years," business manager Larry Coco said.

Many people still stop by. He says he has a great business and a great customer base.
