WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. --

Police are still investigating what witnesses called a horrific accident that left five people dead and another seriously hurt.

Investigators said the crash between a sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle happened Saturday on a south-central Pennsylvania highway in Washington Township, Franklin County, near the Maryland state line.

Police said Gordon Smith, of Johnstown, was driving the SUV, which veered into the opposite lane. The SUV struck one motorcycle, then spun around and collided with another motorcycle.

Smith's wife, Marjorie Smith, was one of the five people killed in the crash.

All four people riding on the motorcycles were killed. Officials said the victims were David and Michelle Russell, Douglas Hoffer Jr. and Colleen Nesbitt.

Gordon Smith is in a Hagerstown hospital and expected to survive. He is a school board member for Westmont and a committee member for Memorial Medical Center. Officials said he has a concussion and broken bones.
