Progress being made in tear-down of historic Bellefonte buildings
By: Lauren Hensley
BELLEFONTE, Pa.-- The bricks started to fall Thursday, marking the start of the demolition of the Hotel Do-De and Garman Theatre in Centre County. After months of delays and uncertainty the demolition process for the two buildings is underway.
It is sort of bittersweet, Ralph Stewart, Bellefonte Borough manger said. We dont like to see buildings come down, but there has been a lot of concern with the properties or what the future would hold for the properties.
The two historic buildings suffered fire damage in 2012. According to Stewart, after they come toppling down and the debris is cleared, a developer plans to build an apartment complex with retail space in its place. The Borough Manager said crews are starting the demolition on Cherry Lane in order to make sure traffic on High Street isnt interrupted.
There was concern about the logistics about not tying up High Street around the courthouse, Stewart said. There is also a little more room to work once you get into the properties to carry out or haul out all of the debris so I think that was all a part of the thinking that was involved.
The demolition is expected to take three to four 4 weeks and Stewart said in that time period drivers can expect High Street to be closed for a period of two days.
