Driver unconscious at time of fatal bus crash

Crash killed bus driver and pregnant coach

By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

HARRISBURG -- Investigators have concluded that the bus driver for a western Pennsylvania college lacrosse team was unconscious when the vehicle crashed in March, killing himself and a pregnant coach.

State police said Wednesday that they found evidence of heart damage in the body of Anthony Guaetta, 61, of Johnstown, and he may have suffered a heart attack or stroke before the crash, but was too badly injured to know for sure.

Police said Guaetta was driving the Mlaker Transportation charter bus that was transporting the Seton Hill University womens lacrosse team when the crash happened near Carlisle in Cumberland County along the Pennsylvania Turnpike on March 16.

Police said the bus left the roadway and crashed through a guiderail and into a tree. Investigators found no skid marks or evidence that Guaetta tried to brake before the impact and tests showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system.

The crash also killed head coach Kristina Quigley, 30, of Greensburg, and her unborn child. Nineteen other people, 18 players and an assistant coach, were injured in the crash.

Guaetta and Mlaker Transportation were named in a lawsuit filed by Amanda Michalsk, a freshman on the lacrosse team at the time of the crash, seeking unspecified damages against the company.
