Cold temperatures cause safety concern

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Despite rescheduling following a rainstorm, it seems Mother Nature has unleashed her wrath upon a Blair County Christmas parade, forcing its cancellation because of cold weather.
Officials with the Altoona Spirit of Christmas Parade said Wednesday that the event would be canceled due to anticipated frigid and below-average temperatures forecasted for Thursday.
Organizers said with real-feel temperatures expected in the single digits, that it would not be in the best interest of the volunteers, participants and those attending the parade to be exposed to the cold weather.
The parade was first scheduled for Dec. 5, but was postponed one week due to rainy weather.
Despite the cancellation of the parade, Executive Director of the Greater Altoona Economic Development Corporation Pat Miller thanked all involved and the sponsors for trying to make this annual event take place.
We felt that the health and welfare of those participating and those viewing the parade was more important than putting on the parade due to the extreme cold weather that is anticipated, Miller said. We hope to make the 2014 parade the best Christmas parade possible."
Organizers said consideration of rescheduling the parade for the third time was discussed but, because of conflicting schedules, other Christmas and holiday related events and logistic issues, the 2013 parade would not be rescheduled.
