Penn State fans react to new football head coach

By: Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-- Word traveled very quickly throughout State College after Penn State named James Franklin as the new Nittany lion's head coach.  The announcement was made early Saturday followed by a meet and greet with the media Saturday afternoon.

It has been a little more than a week Penn State was left without a head football coach after Bill OBrien  left for the NFL.  Penn State officials hired James Franklin. Franklin comes to State College after coaching at Vanderbilt for three seasons.   For some Penn State fans, the name is not too familiar.

I am not too sure about too much about him, but I am excited, Sarah Genther of State College said.  Genther continued that she is hopeful Franklin will deliver a great football season.

For other fans, Franklin is a name with a big coaching reputation.

I think he is going to do pretty well because what he did at Vanderbilt, Penn State student Jacob Jayne said.  I paid close attention to that.  He brought in a really good recruiting class for them and turned their program around.  So I feel like he is going to make us a lot better.

While some fans wanted to see the job go to an internal candidate, others think the external hire will give the team some new life.

I think it is good to get some fresh blood back into the Penn State community, Penn State student Conor Klutch said.  Even though I would have liked to see some of the athletes who left return.

The 2014 Penn State football season kicks off in August in Ireland.
