Local animal group looking to expand

By: WJAC Web Staff

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- An animal rescue group stepped up its fundraising to recruit more volunteers and expand its services.

The first State Animal Response Team was organized in 2004.

That effort has grown to include a county based response group dedicated to rescuing animals.

We provide shelter, different services than the SPCA, said State Animal Response Team member Jennifer Johnson.

An emergency took the team out to a cattle carrier that crashed on Interstate 80 where numerous animals escaped.

Luckily, response team volunteers were able to get back all of the animals.

Its nice to have volunteers in Centre County, said Johnson.

The first response team was formed after a hurricane in North Carolina killing millions of animals.

A program was not in place to provide shelter to assist the animals, which then created a focus to want to start up the program.
