Teller accused of stealing $30K from Centre Co. bank

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A teller at a Centre County bank is accused of stealing $30,000 following an audit of the bank's accounts, police investigators said.

State College police filed theft and other charges against Dorothea Bird, of Bellefonte, for allegedly taking the money. An October audit found discrepancies in her deposits. Bird was the lead teller at the M&T Bank on South Atherton Street and had direct access to the bank's vault, the accounts of which she was responsible for balancing.

According to the criminal complaint, the bank underwent a surprise audit, which was when a $30,000 miscellaneous debit was found.

The auditor linked the debit to Bird's computer, showing that she was responsible for clearing it, police said. When the auditor asked Bird about the $30,000, Bird said that the bank was busy just before closing time, when the client came in with the deposit, and she made the changes to allow the transaction.

Police said the auditor took Bird's story to the bank manager, who contacted the depositor, and learned Bird's story didn't match.

Further investigation revealed Bird's electronic journal showed she never closed her teller's drawer the previous Friday or Saturday, which allowed tellers to cancel transactions and manipulate credits and debits, police said.

Police said they obtained surveillance video of Bird removing money from a cash drawer in the vault and taking several straps of currency, police said.

Police alleged that Bird's electronic journal showed several suspicious transactions, which they said they believe she made to try to hide the $30,000 debit.

Bird was released on $10,000 unsecured bond and has a hearing scheduled for March 5.
