USS Somerset commissioned Saturday

By: WJAC Web Staff

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- A new U.S. Navy ship was put into service Saturday morning honoring 40 passengers and crew from Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

About 5,000 people showed up for the commissioning ceremony in Philadelphia.

I am feeling proud all 40 heroes on that plane, said Joan Burkholtz, a family member of a Flight 93 victim.

Proud of the heroes of Flight 93, said Gerald Bingham, a family member of a Flight 93 victim.

The families of Flight 93 victims filled the seats for the commissioning ceremony. One of them was Deborah Brza whose daughter was on Flight 93.

I see every bit of her in each one of those sailors. They are my daughters age, said Brza.

A group of Somerset County residents was also there as part of a community effort to support the victims families and what the ship stands for.

Miles from my house, a big part of the U.S., said Dawn McVicker from Somerset County.

The ceremony included a gun salute. The American flag was also raised and political leaders said a few words and then the ship was ready to sail.

Man this ship and bring her to life, said McVicker.
