Controlled burn planned on Centre Co. game lands

By: WJAC Web Staff

HALFMOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Game Commission has scheduled a controlled burn for game lands in Centre County, depending on the weather.

Game Commission officials said the controlled burn is scheduled for Monday at the Scotia Barrens, part of state game lands 176, in Ferguson, Halfmoon and Patton townships, west of State College.

The commission plans to burn 81 acres, known as unit 11, officials said. Depending on the weather conditions, the commission planned to burn up to five units totaling 340 acres between Monday and May 24.

The burns are done to restore pine and oak ecosystems on the Scotia Barrens, officials said. Area residents may see or smell emerging smoke from the area during the burning.
