Bedford company lays off 40 employees

By: Marc Stempka

BEDFORD, Pa. -- A plastics company in Bedford County has laid off 40 employees, citing poor economic conditions, but officials are hoping to have the employees return to work in the near future.

Representatives with Bedford Reinforced Plastics confirmed Tuesday that 40 of its 250 full time employees were temporarily laid off beginning April 4 due to the current economic conditions.

"First quarter sales have been much slower than expected, so we are taking necessary steps to keep operating costs in line with revenues," Human Resources Director Mike Beaupre said in a release.

Beaupre said the company expects sales to return to normal as the economy improves.

"We believe these short-term measures are essential to ensure that the company remains a viable employer in the community in the future," Beaupre said.

There was no timetable provided about when employees may be called to return to work.
