Police warn of increase in scams
State police are warning about an increase in scams targeting elderly people in the area.
Over the weekend, state police said an elderly woman was scammed out of $18,000. Thats money police said she will likely never get back.
They said there are things people need to do, like not giving out bank account information and looking into the business before shelling out any cash.
"There's nothing wrong with them checking (the business) out, said state police trooper David McGarvey. If a person is putting sales pitch on that the deal needs to be done soon, that should be one indicator that it is a scam."
Police warn that people should not just be on the lookout for phone scams, but said they are seeing more and more email and mail scams.
Officers said never pay for a free prize and call police immediately if you suspect you're being scammed.
