Commission recommends mobile home park zoned for potential student housing

COLLEGE TWP., Pa -- After months of meetings and controversy, the possibility still exists that student housing could be located in a shuttered Centre Co. mobile home park.

The College Township planning commission recommended Tuesday night rezoning the former Hilltop Mobile Home Park from R1 to R2.  That means single family homes, townhomes and duplexes can be constructed there.

Not everyone is happy about it.

"You must respect us, one resident said while addressing the commission.

People living close to the old park told the commission they fear its future development will turn into student housing.  They said they fear a new development will mean higher traffic volumes on what they describe as already busy roadways.   Still others said they are worried about quality of life and how it could change if a student housing development is built.

I care about our happiness in living there," resident Sue Ann Graham said.

The planning commissions recommendation must be approved by the College Township Council.  It is scheduled to vote on the recommendation at its September 5 meeting.
