Suspicious package causes evacuation of Centre County building

Building evacuated for about 45 minutes

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Officials evacuated a Centre County office building Tuesday after a possible suspicious package was delivered.

Officials said the Willowbank county office building was evacuated at about 8:30 a.m. after security personnel in the building raised suspicions about the possible contents of the package.

Officials said employees were evacuated from the Holmes Street building in Bellefonte for about 45 minutes while authorities analyzed the package.

Bellefonte police and emergency personnel were called to building and a local bomb squad was notified of the incident, but did not respond, officials said.

At the weekly Centre County Commissioners meeting, commissioner Tim Boyd provided additional details about the incident.

Boyd said the package was addressed to the domestic relations department and due to the way the package was wrapped, and that wires were sticking out, precautions were taken to make sure the package was not harmful.

Officials said the package was opened and it was determined to be a plaque that had some wires dislodged and sticking out of the wrapping.

The building has since been reopened and daily operations continued as normal.
