Penn State student hangout undergoing changes

by Erin Calandra

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The student gathering place at Penn State's University Park campus is getting a major make-over.

Officials kicked off the $44 million project with a sledge hammer event at "The Hub" Thursday afternoon.
Damon Sims, vice president of student affairs, said this project represents the hard work students do inside and outside of the classroom.

"There is a positive energy in this building all the time that is what is so wonderful about Penn State," he said.
The 55-thousand square foot expansion and 52-thousand square foot renovation is mostly funded by student facility fees.

It will add top notch gathering and eating areas, as well as multi-purpose rooms.
An official THON retail store will also be added to the student building so THON gear can be sold year round.

"It really will be a testament of the hard work and support that our volunteers have given us the past 50 years," said Ryan Patrick, THON executive director.
Construction is expected to be finished by summer 2015.
