Cancer victim works to help others

By Erin Calandra

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A Centre County woman who is battling breast cancer is paying it forward after getting help from a her own support system.

Jaime Van Orden had chemotherapy and is now undergoing radiation therapy.

The mother of a four-year-old son says she's not letting her disease define her and she and her friend started a fund called the "Jaime Effect."

They sell $20 t-shirts and all of the proceeds go to people in need. Through the fund they send $100 gift cards to people facing hard times. They call it sending sunshine.

Jaime said the recipients are able to spend the money on anything they want such as a co-pay, manicure or even a fun day with the kids.

"Every moment is precious, she said.  I get those blessings all the time so its nice to give that back to somebody."
Jaime says the community has been generous sending her gifts and cards and on Tuesday, employees of Trader Joe's bought her groceries and flowers.
