Smoking ban vetoed by Punxsutawney mayor

By: Deven Clarke

Smoking in public places almost became illegal this week in Punxsutawney.

Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to ban it, but the mayor quickly vetoed.

Under the ban, smoking would be off limits in public areas such as parks and playgrounds.

Violators would be subject to fines up to $300.

The mayor said no to the idea, and Council members said the mayor doesn't understand the dangers of secondhand smoke.

The president of the Council said he plans to raise this issue again at the next meeting.

If they get a majority plus one vote, that will override the mayor's veto.
