State randomly inspects garbage trucks

By: Gary Sinderson and WJAC Web Staff
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. --

How safe are the garbage trucks going through neighborhoods and each day?

To help answer that question, state inspectors conduct random inspections of waste-hauling vehicles.

Wednesday, the random inspections took place in Centre County, where visitors set up shop at the Solid Waste Authority.

Inspectors from the Department of Environmental Protection inspected every trash truck that came through, no matter what the size, and stopped to inspect it.

"They do it randomly. They just did one in October," said Joanne Shafer of the Centre Co. Solid Waste Authority.

Pennsylvania imports a great deal of out-of-state trash. In addition, in recent years, more waste from the Marcellus shale drilling.

At the Centre County station, mainly local trucks come in and inspectors checked out everything.

Officials said that, oftentimes during similar inspections, 40 percent to 50 percent of the trucks have at least one violation, though those are usually minor.

The inspection program, known as Trash Net, is done in conjunction with Pennsylvania State Police.
