Police: Man fires gun into Somerset Co. home

Police subdue suspect without incident

By: Marc Stempka

ELK LICK TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A man is in the Somerset County Jail after police said he fired a gun into a home because he thought his family was stealing from him.

State police at Somerset said Richard Livengood, 82, was arrested after he tried to kick in the front door of a home along Shade Hollow Road in Elk Lick Township at about 9 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Richard Livengood was unsuccessful at kicking in the door and went to a nearby kitchen window, where he pointed a rifle he was carrying through the window, and  then returned to the front door and fired the gun through the glass portion of the door area.

In a criminal complaint, police alleged Richard Livengood believed that family members were stealing money from him and he was trying to get that money returned.

Police said a trooper who arrived at the scene was able to subdue Richard Livengood and take him into custody without incident.

Police listed Betty Cooper, 54, Dennis Cooper, 52, Michael Cooper, 27, and Goldie Livengood, 75, all of Salisbury, as victims. The four were in the home at the time and none of them were injured.

Police said Richard Livengood was charged with aggravated assault, attempted burglary, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure and other charges and was jailed on $150,000 bond.

Police said additional troopers from the Somerset barracks, the Maryland State Police and state police at the Somerset Turnpike barracks assisted.

Richard Livengood is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 21.
